Romney Ritchie to Take Part in Envision’s National Youth Leadership Forum: Pathways to STEM
This summer, Romney Ritchie from Broadway, VA will join outstanding elementary school students from across the nation to take part in a unique academic development experience, the National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF): Pathways to STEM, at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. NYLF Pathways to STEM is one of the Envision family of programs (www.envisionexperience.com) that enable students to explore their interests and experience learning beyond the classroom.
Romney was nominated to attend the program by his principal, Alisa Sims, at Fulks Run Elementary School (FRES). In addition to being an active member in the Fulks Run Ruritan Club, Romney participates in student STEM after school, the Challenge Program, the FRES 24 Math Club, and the student SCA. Romney has a passion for acting and has been in several community theatre productions, including Schultz Theatre’s 2016 productions of "The Last of the Dragons" and "The Elves and the Shoemaker” and Theater Shenandoah’s 2017 musical production of “A Christmas Carol.” In addition to acting, Romney enjoys reading, farming, hunting, and hiking. Romney is looking forward to gaining the hands-on experience in criminal investigation, robotics, and emergency medicine that the forum provides.
“NYLF Pathways to STEM is a great opportunity for high-achieving scholars to get outside the classroom and see, through hands-on interactive learning, how to innovate and think creatively,” said Andrew Potter, the Chief Academic Officer for Envision. “These students, who have already proven themselves academically, are challenged to work on real-world, student-created projects to bring their studies and career interests to life.”
Since 1985, Envision programs have served more than 800,000 students in more than 145 countries, with programs designed to help students develop the leadership, scholarship and career skills needed to succeed in today’s competitive college and career landscape.
Attention all FRES students and staff: Please wear a blue shirt to school on Friday, April 20 in recognition and support of Autism Awareness Month. We will take an all school photo tomorrow afternoon!
The meeting scheduled for April 16 has been rescheduled. The FRES PTA will meet Wednesday, April 25 at 6:30 PM.
FREE Tdap and HPV vaccines are being offered by the Health Department to rising sixth graders on May 2 at FRES. Tdap vaccine is required to enter sixth grade; the HPV vaccine is optional. Return your child's immunization form as soon as possible, but no later than April 18. Take advantage of these FREE vaccinations and avoid making a doctors appointment and a long wait at the doctors office!
Please note that there will be no walk in clinic at the Health Department in August. It is unclear if they will be offered at the Rockingham County Fair this year.
