Ms. Grim shared the story with staff at FRES and that's when the FRES family got involved. FRES students competed by classrooms to collect the most items and in total collected 1224 items! (Fifth grade won the competition with over 200 items collected and enjoyed ice cream to celebrate their efforts!) Some students wrote letters to the students in Mrs. Hooks first grade to show support and encouragement. Some of the students donated their "good" prizes they had earned for good behavior here at FRES. In addition, our community donated $400 which was used to buy items such as backpacks, lunch bags and a $100 Wal-Mart card so that Ms. Hooks could purchase supplies her students may still need.
So many students expressed their willingness to help pack the items that a packing party was planned. The entire student body gathered in the gym where Mrs. Sims, Principal and Ms. Grim, 1st grade spoke to the students about caring and giving from the heart. They both expressed how proud they were of the outpouring of compassion and caring the FRES family had shown. Fifth grade helped to direct younger students to put their items in the correct boxes and with 170 students helping, within minutes the items were separated. The items were transported to Winchester, VA where Fabritek Company, Inc.
prepared the items to be loaded into a truck and shipped to Baytown, TX. Fabritek Company, Inc. also paid half the cost of shipping and the other half was donated by an anonymous donor. FRES thanks everyone who contributed to this effort with heartfelt appreciation!
